ticTOCs new Journal Tables of Contents Service

ticTOCs is a new, free scholarly tables of contents service, providing access to the more recent tables of contents of 12,000+ scholarly journals from over 430 publishers.

ticTOCs is searchable by title subject or publisher. Registration is free an allows you to save favourite journal searches to revisit at a later date.

EThOS- new thesis service from the British Library

The British Library has set up a new service, in conjunction with major universities, to provide access to the full text of UK PhD theses online. The service, called EThOS, is available via a dedicated website

The site is open to all, and can be keyword searched without having to register – when you find a thesis you want, register with your email address, create a password, and you are then able to download your chosen thesis to your PC as a .pdf file.

If a specific thesis is listed, but not immediately available for download, you can register and place an order for it, and BL will arrange with the holding institution to have the thesis digitised: they will then email you when it becomes available on the website. They envisage a turnaround time of around a week for this.

If the thesis you require is not listed, you can place a speculative request through the website, and again BL will digitise and make it available online if possible – BL will email you the result of your request. There is generally no charge to you for this, but on rare occasions, depending on the home institution, payment will be requested for the digitisation – if this should be the case with your chosen thesis, please contact ill@wlv.ac.uk or any Learning Centre Information Helpdesk, and we will organise this for you.

The EThOS website has Help and FAQ pages with more information on the service.

http://ethos.bl.uk . Several thousand theses are already immediately available through the site, and more are continually being added. It means that you will not now place requests for UK theses through the Learning Centres, but directly yourself through their website.

Christmas opening hours

Seasons Greetings to all our students!

All learning centres will be closed on the following dates over Christmas;
Saturday 20th & Sunday 21st December
Thursday 25th December til Sunday 28th December

Learning centres will open from 9am – 5pm on Monday 22nd - Wednesday 24th December.

Compton and Telford Learning centres will remain closed from Monday 29th December onwards, re-opening on 3rd of January when normal term-time opening hours will apply.

Harrison and Walsall Learning centres will be open with security staff only at the following times throughout the vacation period;

Monday 29th December -Wednesday 31st December: 9am-5pm

Friday 2nd January: 9am-5pm.

You will be able to study, use PCs and return and borrow items via the auto service machines during these times, on production of a valid University ID card.

Search for the titles through OPAC in the usual way and click on the link to the electronic resource. You may be prompted for your IT username and password if working off-campus.

Careers Advice and Study Skills at Telford Learning Centre

Careers advice is available at Telford Campus on Mondays and Thursdays between 10am and 4pm. Students can book an hour long session with Bob Almond using the appointments diary outside the careers room, or just drop-in if he is free.

There is also a study skills advisor based at Telford Campus on Thursdays between 11am and 2pm. Students can drop-in, or sign up for a 30 minute slot on the booking form kept on the study skills desk on the top floor of Telford Learning Centre. If you have any enquiries, staff can be contacted on 01902 323983.
